This is the inaugural year for ESL at Helen Cox, and with the help of the ESL support team at Helen Cox and JPPSS we are successfully assisting these diverse students in their pursuit of a high school education and preparedness for college. The photo depicts our 1st period using laptops to write narratives and familiarize themselves with Microsoft Word. Documents are saved, emailed to the instructor, edited and published online. Others are using the laptops with headphones and microphones to access Rosetta Stone, the popular online program for beginners learning English.
There are approximately 80 ESL students currently enrolled at Helen Cox High, half of whom are not yet proficient enough for standard curriculum classes. These are Arabic, Vietnamese, Latino, and Haitian students, whose limited abilities range from beginner to advanced. Our goal is to ensure their success to the best of our ability, and to make certain that all teachers provide accommodations and modifications as prescribed for their continued success. Our ESL teachers are veteran ELA instructors Mr. Frederick Woodworth and myself, Mr.Ron Caron, assisted by para-translators Ms. Carmen Arellano and Mr. Keian Nawash
